The five SEO must-haves for ranking on Google

Confused by SEO? You’re not alone.

Navigating the expansive SEO landscape can be overwhelming, at times even for SEO specialists!

The reason for this is that SEO is a vast, constantly advancing field. SEO comprises a range of components including website structure, research, marketing, strategic planning and content development - which is fast becoming the kingpin of SEO.

SEO is by no means an overnight fix; it’s important to take a long term, strategic approach if you’re serious about achieving sustainable and credible results. It takes regular monitoring, measurement and tweaking to ensure you’re keeping up with trends and responding to your audience’s needs – just as you would do to support the growth of your business.

To get you moving, we’ve listed our top five SEO must-haves for when you’re starting out on your SEO journey.

1. Make sure your website is mobile friendly

In 2015 Google expanded its search criteria to include the mobile-friendliness of websites. As a result, if your site isn’t optimised for mobile, it may impact your ability to rank well on Google. It’s easy to check if your site is optimised for mobile by using this Mobile Friendly Test Tool. If it turns out your site isn’t mobile ready, speak to the Attik team who can give you advice on what to do next.

2. Do your keyword research

Keywords are both words and phrases that your audience types into Google to conduct a search. Taking some time to research these keywords and phrases, using a tool such as Google’s Keyword Planner, can give you great insight into what words your customers are using to search. Keyword research is a valuable asset that should be used to plan your online campaigns and develop keyword rich content, all of which can help you to rank higher with Google.

3. Complete your meta

Every website includes space behind the scenes to complete data that tells Google what your website is about. There are sections for page titles, page descriptions and keywords that can be customised to describe each page of your website and help it to rank higher in Google search results. If you forget to complete the data you’re missing out on a key, no-cost SEO opportunity and Google will have to work harder to understand and rank your site.

4. Optimise your content with keywords

We mentioned content earlier in this blog post and think it is so important that it deserves to rank number four and five in our top SEO must-haves list. If you’ve actioned item 2 on the list, you’re now able to use your keywords and phrases within your content for optimum searchability. The secret is to not “over-use” them; Google doesn’t take kindly to websites that over-use keywords in poorly considered fashion. Equally however, strategically placing your keywords in the title and throughout your content can help your site visitors get more from your content and help Google to identify and rank your page.

5.  Develop great content!

This might sound easy but it’s not as simple as putting pen to paper. To develop great content, you need to go back to basics and really understand your audience’s needs. What problem can you solve for them or what opportunity can you create? Rather than creating content that is purely promotional– and let’s face it, anyone can do that – your aim should be to show your audience that you have a deeper understanding of their circumstances and challenges, and direct them towards solutions and outcomes that can add value to their business, family or personal needs. Not only will your audience come to trust you and be more likely to buy your product, Google will reward you handsomely for creating a valuable visitor experience with favourable search engine rankings.

While this is our top five for getting started in SEO it is by no means an exhaustive list. There are plenty of other SEO actions you can take from your desktop, including the creation of backlinks to your website, promoting your content through social media, creating a Google Places for Business listing and continued analysis and measurement of your site performance using a tool such as Google Analytics. In the meantime, get started with our top SEO tips and you’ll be well on your way to successful SEO.
